Principal's Message

Dr. Pires

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I welcome you to the John B. DeValles Elementary School. Established in 1920, we have a rich history of providing a rigorous educational experience to students guided by the virtues exhibited by our namesake, the “Angel of the Trenches.” Today, the DeValles Dragons work hard everyday to be Brilliant Scholars, Kind Leaders, and Safe Community Members. This motto reminds each of us to contribute to our learning space intentionally so that we can all benefit from our collective experience and growth.

Students, I am thrilled for the opportunity to work with you for the first time this year. You are joining a community with a long legacy of excellence and I know you all have so much light to shine. You will be in great hands with our fantastic educators and we will push you to be the best version of yourselves! Work hard to make the best of this experience and participate in afterschool and extracurricular programs.

Families, it is our hope that we become great partners in the educational journey of your child. The New Bedford Public Schools has many community resources and services available to ensure your scholar thrives. Take ownership of your child’s success by reading with your child, checking in on their grades regularly, attending school events, and reaching out to us when you need support.

Just as John B. DeValles persevered through challenging times to help others in need, so too shall all DeValles Dragons work hard to be Brilliant Scholars, Kind Leaders, and Safe Community Members. I am proud to lead the school that was foundational to my success as a young person and I promise to work hard everyday to provide a safe and productive learning environment that supports the success of all students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Pires
